At Action for Animals Maine will always do our best to help you find care for your pets. If we can’t help you, we can provide information and connect you to the appropriate resources for your situation.

We can also provide pet food in emergency situations. We have a list of pet food pantries in Maine and veterinary medicine support groups.

Medical Assistance and Emergencies

  • Brown Dog Foundation
    • Allocates financial resources first to pets whose life is in near-immediate danger and whose “gap” the organization’s on-hand resources can cover. Can also offer educational guidance and referral to lower cost treatment alternatives, creative payment alternatives and / or other programs to help individuals in need.
  • Dogs on Deployment
    • Veterinary Assistance Program (VAP) offers financial grants to help cover emergency veterinary expenses for military pets in need of urgent care.
    • Operation Pet Wellness (OPW) provides free and discounted spay/neuter surgeries, vaccinations, and microchipping for military pets through a nationwide voucher program. Military pet owners can use these vouchers at participating clinics or with their local veterinarian.
  • Falmouth Vet Hospital Mainely Pets Foundation
    • Assists pets, pet owners, and pet caregivers in Maine who are experiencing trauma or financial need, from assisting with sick or injured pets to helping pet caregivers experiencing personal catastrophe such as a home or barn fire.
  • Friends and Vets Helping Pets
  • Kennebunk Animal Welfare Society Companion Program
  • PAWS 4 A Cure
    • Provides financial assistance throughout the United States to those who cannot afford the illness or injury treatment for their dog or cat regardless of age, breed, or diagnosis. Financial assistance is provided for the treatment of non-routine veterinary care, including medication, insulin, Heartworm positive treatment and medical equipment.
  • Pet Assistance, Inc.
  • RedRover Relief Urgent Care Grant
    • The Urgent Care Grant provides financial assistance, resources, and emotional support for pet guardians struggling with economics hardship during pet life-threatening situations.
  • STARelief and Pet Assistance
    • The Home for Life Grant provides those in need of medical care, such as emergency services, spay/neuter, routine medical care (vaccines, microchip, etc.), and end-of-life services. The grant also provides emergency boarding services and foster care (See Emergency Boarding section for more information).
  • The Mosby Foundation
  • The Onyx & Breezy Foundation
    • Provides funding and support for spay/neuter programs, rescue of animals from kill shelters, medicine supply, and other programs. See website for full list.
  • The Pet Fund
    • Provides non-basic, non-urgent veterinary care funding, which includes medical needs such as cancer treatment, heart disease, chronic conditions, endocrine diseases, eye diseases, etc.

  • FVEAP Kobi Fund for Vaccine Associated Sarcoma
    • Financially assists cat and kitten guardians who are unable to afford veterinary services to save their companion with Vaccine Associated Sarcoma (VAS), also known as Injection Site Sarcoma (ISS).

Emergency Boarding

  • Animal Welfare Society’s Stay@Home Program & Pets and Survivors Safety (PASS) Program
    • Assists pet owners who are temporarily displaced and need a safe place for their pet to stay while they secure permanent housing. The Stay@Home Program provides other services, such as canine behavioral assistance and a list of pet food and supplies in the surrounding area.
  • Dogs on Deployment
  • PACT for Animals
    • Assists veterans, hospital patients and military personnel by placing their pets into temporary foster homes until their owners can be reunited with them.
  • RedRover Relief Safe Escape Grant
    • Helps families with pets safely escape domestic violence together through funding that is mainly provided to help with the cost of one month of pet boarding and other boarding associated costs while survivor(s) are in a domestic violence shelter.
  • STARelief and Pet Assistance Emergency Boarding/Foster Care Assistance
